Summer Evenings in Sète
The magic of a Summer Evening

We are just coming to the end of a long period of intense heat. After days when temperatures have approached 40C , the evenings provide some welcome relief, although even then it has rarely felt cool. We have been spending some time in Sète, where the evenings have a special allure. Flocks of starlings chatter as they fly up and down our avenue , seeking to perch in the tree tops before dusk falls. Just around then we venture out into the street to stroll around the locality in the cooling air.
We watch the waters of the Canale Royal and Canale de Péyrade begin to colour as the sun sets.

A round walk takes us past canals and over bridges, and we finally end up once more back in avenue Victor Hugo, where the coloured fountain lights in Place Stalingrad attract local families. Parents sit on the nearby benches chatting, while children play in the jets of water. Their enthralled faces glow red and blue as the colours change.

By the time we return to our apartment it is dark. I watch from the balcony as a full moon rises above the roof tops to the east, while a cruise liner that has recently docked in port to our south, glows in the moonlight like a ghost ship.
