Shades of Grey

SEASONS

What do we think of , when we consider the word grey? A grey area means that we are caught between two different views . Grey suits, and grey hair denote distinguishment, or maybe just old age. And a grey mood, is certainly not considered to be a good one . So I must assume that everyone finds the colour grey depressing. If that is truly the case , then at this moment I should be feeling extremely depressed indeed. We are spending a week by the Welsh coast where every one of the past five days has been endlessly grey. What's more, there has been an awful lot of heavy rain. Every day we have undertaken our favourite walk around the headland, often returning home soaked through, as the heavens have opened above us. Yes indeed, we have every reason to feel fed up, or should I say, in a grey mood?

Rain Ahead!

On waking up each morning I see grey skies , with the cold, grey waters of the Severn estuary beyond. Today , the windowpane was spotted with rain as the post man delivered the mail.

On no...not more rain!

But wait a minute...there is beauty in those dark grey winter trees with their different shapes, and twisting branches. And as for the gloomy sky...look more closely and you will see a myriad of different greys...from dark charcoal, through dolphin grey to a brighter silvery grey, where the sun tantalises us with vague promises.

But it isn't only the skies that bring delight on these grey days. The seas too reflect the gloomy sky in interesting ways, while the waves add a little drama. The blue seas of summer are long gone, but when the sun peeps through, the grey waters turn a gentle shade of eau de nil. How I wish that I were an artist to paint this scene . I shall just have to restrict myself to painting with words instead.

Early next week we shall be leaving these shores behind to continue our interrail journey, venturing into Spain before turning back towards our home in Southern France. But to get to Spain we shall first have to cross a the reputedly stormy Bay of Biscay. I shall report back in my next blog.
